Honoring the Heart of Home Care: Celebrating Nurses Week in May

By Denise Bellville, RN, BS, Executive Director

Each year in May, during National Nurses Week, we pause to recognize the extraordinary dedication, compassion, and clinical excellence of nurses across the country. But in the home care community, the role of nurses is especially profound. They are not only clinicians — they are educators, advocates, coordinators, problem-solvers, and trusted partners in some of life’s most vulnerable moments.

This month, we proudly celebrate the nurses who make it possible for Floridians to remain safe, supported, and healthy at home.

The Unique Role of Nurses in Home Care

Home care nurses practice in one of the most complex and independent clinical environments in health care — the patient’s home. Every visit requires not only clinical judgment, but adaptability, communication, and compassion.

In home care, nurses:

  • Deliver skilled clinical services in non-traditional care environments
  • Monitor patient conditions and prevent avoidable hospitalizations
  • Educate patients and families to manage care confidently between visits
  • Coordinate with physicians, therapists, aides, and caregivers
  • Support transitions from hospital to home
  • Ensure safety, dignity, and comfort where patients feel most secure

Their impact extends far beyond a single visit — it shapes outcomes, independence, and quality of life.

Bringing Clinical Excellence Directly to Florida’s Communities

Across Florida, home care nurses serve patients in cities, suburbs, and rural communities alike. They travel long distances, adapt to changing conditions, and often become the consistent clinical presence patients rely on most.

They help:

  • Children with complex medical needs remain safely at home with their families
  • Older adults maintain independence and avoid institutional care
  • Individuals recovering from illness or surgery regain strength and confidence
  • Families navigate complicated treatment plans with clarity and reassurance

Home care nurses are often the bridge between the health care system and the home—and that bridge changes lives.

Compassion That Extends Beyond the Clinical Task

What makes home care nursing truly special is the relationship.

Unlike facility-based care, nurses in the home see the full picture: the environment, the family dynamics, the daily routines, and the challenges patients face outside traditional settings. That insight allows them to provide care that is deeply personalized and truly patient-centered.

They notice what others might miss.

They advocate when others cannot.

They stay when reassurance matters most.

And they do it all with professionalism and heart.

Supporting the Future of Nursing in Home Care

As the demand for care at home continues to grow, so does the need to support and strengthen the nursing workforce that makes it possible.

That means:

  • Investing in training and education
  • Advocating for policies that support home-based care delivery
  • Expanding pathways for nurses to practice at the top of their license
  • Recognizing the leadership role nurses play across the continuum of care

The future of health care is increasingly centered in the home — and nurses are leading the way forward.

A Message of Gratitude During Nurses Week

To every nurse serving patients in homes across Florida and beyond:

Thank you for your clinical expertise.

Thank you for your compassion.

Thank you for your advocacy.

Thank you for your resilience.

And thank you for the difference you make every single day.

During Nurses Week, and every week, we celebrate you as the heart of home care.
