Report: Almost Half of Medicare Beneficiaries Utilizing Home Health Have 5 or More Chronic Conditions

Medicare

The Research Institute for Home Care (RIHC) issued the Home Care Chartbook 2022 on December 21, 2022, which provides a comprehensive overview of the home health landscape, including demographic data and organizational trends.

RIHC found that 45% of all Medicare home health users have five or more chronic conditions, which is also true when assessing beneficiaries who are enrolled in Medicare Advantage. RIHC also found that 17.3% of beneficiaries have four chronic conditions, 13.8% have three chronic conditions, and 23.9% have between zero and two chronic conditions.

This report comes at a time when Medicare Advantage plans are becoming more popular among aging Baby Boomers and drawing the scrutiny of lawmakers and government watchdogs. The Office of Inspector General (OIG) alleges that Medicare plans denied or delayed services last year.
