AHCA Imposes Statewide Medicaid Enrollment Moratorium on New DME Providers Following Federal Action
Florida has moved quickly to align with recent federal action targeting fraud, waste, and abuse in the durable medical equipment space.
Following the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ February 27, 2026 notice imposing a six-month nationwide Medicare enrollment moratorium on new Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies (DMEPOS) medical supply companies, the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) announced that, effective March 20, 2026, it is imposing a temporary statewide Medicaid moratorium on the enrollment of new DME providers (Provider Type 90).
For home health providers and others operating in the care-at-home space, the development is another clear sign that federal and state officials are intensifying program integrity efforts in high-risk service categories.
What This Means
- Existing Medicaid-enrolled DME providers may continue delivering services and billing as usual
- The moratorium applies only to new enrollments
- Entities that provide DME as a secondary function (e.g., pharmacies, hospitals, home health agencies) are not impacted
Why It Matters
This action reflects increased federal and state focus on program integrity in high-risk service areas. While the immediate impact on existing providers is limited, it signals:
- Heightened scrutiny of certain service categories
- Tighter controls on new provider enrollment
- Continued emphasis on documentation, ownership transparency, and billing integrity
Bottom Line
The moratorium is narrow in scope but directionally significant. Providers should view this as part of a broader enforcement environment and ensure compliance practices are audit-ready.
