CMS Releases Key Resources for Medicaid "Unwinding" Process
CMS Releases Key Resources for Medicaid "Unwinding" Process
On September 9, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a comprehensive resource guide on the Medicaid "unwinding" process, which began in early 2023. As states transition back to pre-COVID Medicaid eligibility rules, many home care recipients have faced disruptions in coverage due to the reinstatement of annual renewal requirements.
While no new guidance was issued, CMS reiterated its August 29 Informational Bulletin, extending the timeline for states to complete all Medicaid renewals through December 31, 2025. This extension provides more time for enrollees to navigate the renewal process and for providers to assist patients in maintaining coverage.

Updated Outreach and Educational Materials
CMS has also refreshed its Medicaid and CHIP Renewals Outreach and Educational Resources with new materials that providers can use to educate patients about ongoing renewal requirements. These tools are available online here, making it easier for providers to share up-to-date information and help patients avoid losing coverage.
As the unwinding continues, it's crucial for providers to stay informed and proactively engage with patients to ensure they understand the steps needed to maintain their Medicaid coverage.
